JAMES CLAIBORNE ALLRED, II

On Wednesday, March 7, 2007, Mr. Allred died of leukemia at the age of 60. He was born in Erwin, Tennessee; graduated from East Tennessee State University with a B.A. in Speech and Drama; and then went into the United States Marine Corps where he served from 1969 through 1979. While in the Marine Corps, Mr. Allred attained the rank of Major and as an aviator flew medivac helicopters during his tour in Viet Nam. In 1979, Mr. Allred decided to leave the military in order to become a lawyer and entered The Catholic University, Columbus School of Law. He graduated in 1982 and began practicing in the Northern Virginia Area. In June 1995, Mr. Allred helped form the law firm of Allred, Bacon, Halfhill & Young, P.C., with whom he practiced until his death. During this time, Jim represented families and businesses with wisdom, a pleasant demeanor, and devotion to their needs. He is survived by his wife Debra, his daughters Juli and Lara, and his “brothers” and extended family at Allred, Bacon, Halfhill & Young.

James T. Bacon

Jim Bacon has been in practice since 1982 and has represented corporations, municipalities and individuals in complex commercial matters. Always willing to advocate a unique or difficult case, he is licensed in the state and federal courts of Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. He received his law degree from the American University School of Law, has a varied trial and appellate practice, is active in the Defense Research Institute and has served as a lecturer at trial advocacy seminars. His areas of concentration include complex commercial litigation, computer technology, franchising, insurance matters, business and employment matters and government contract matters, collection matters and homeowners'/condominium association law.

Stephen D. Halfhill

Steve Halfhill concentrates in business, security, commodity and regulatory law, as well as domestic relations, traffic/criminal matters and general litigation. After receiving his J.D. Degree from West Virginia University in 1974, Mr. Halfhill entered the United States Army where he served as a Captain in the Judge Advocate General's Corps. Upon completion of his military service, Mr. Halfhill became an Assistant Director in the Commodity Future Trading Commission's Division of Enforcement and later was Special Counsel to the Director of the Commodity Future Trading Commission's Division of Trading & Markets. He has been in private practice since 1981, and is a member of the Bars of the District of Columbia, Virginia, and West Virginia. In addition, he is experienced in major federal litigation nationally, and is an experienced appellate practice as well as domestic relations, criminal, traffic, business and homeowners'/condominium association law.

Warner F. Young, III

 

Warner Young is an experienced trial lawyer, representing the seriously injured in professional negligence (medical and legal), products liability (aviation, medical devices and pharmacological), and other tort cases. Over the past few years Mr. Young has been assisting clients and their families in family matters (wills, estates and trusts planning and administration and matters concerning the elderly). Mr. Young has particular expertise in representing people who have suffered traumatic brain injuries. He has obtained for his clients million dollar verdicts and settlements in Virginia and nationally. As a result of obtaining large recoveries for his clients, Mr. Young has developed expertise in wealth preservation, including estate planning, drafting of wills and trusts and administration of estates and trusts. Additionally, Mr. Young represents diverse clients such as national clinical laboratories and small technology and service businesses in commercial litigation matters ranging from business torts to contract disputes. Since graduating from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1984, Mr. Young has been a frequent lecturer on evidence, medical/legal issues, and trial techniques. He also serves as a private mediator/arbitrator and is a judicially appointed case evaluator.

Ken Curtis
 
Mr. Curtis joined the firm in 2009 with more than 25 years experience as a trial lawyer. Much of his legal career has been devoted to the preparation and trial of complex medical and legal negligence matters both as a defense attorney and as plaintiff's counsel.

He began his legal career as an Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney in Virginia, and subsequently gained valuable trial experience with a firm specializing in insurance defense litigation. Over the years, he has represented a number of physicians and health care institutions, including metropolitan area hospitals and a major HMO. He has handled numerous general liability and wrongful death matters, complex medical malpractice cases, including catastrophic birth injury, traumatic brain injury, obstetrical malpractice, psychiatric malpractice involving suicide, plastic and reconstructive surgery, infectious diseases, pharmacology, cardiac misdiagnoses, elevator and airplane accidents, construction defect matters, and intellectual property litigation involving misappropriation of trade secret and proprietary information, breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, copyright infringement, conspiracy, fraud, and violation of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act.

In addition to his legal practice, Mr. Curtis was an adjunct professor at The International School of Law and The George Mason University School of Law, teaching forensic evidence and directing the legal intern program. He was also an instructor at the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Academy. Mr. Curtis has been a frequent lecturer in Virginia on the topics of expert testimony, the preparation and use of evidence at trial, and personal injury issues. He is widely known in Virginia for his knowledge of evidence and expert testimony, and is co-author of Virginia Objections at Trial, the trial lawyer’s handbook for the law of evidence in Virginia. Currently, Mr. Curtis is a member of the faculty of the National Trial Advocacy College at the University of Virginia, one of the country’s premier trial advocacy programs for lawyers and law students.

Mr. Curtis has been involved in alternative dispute resolution, serving as a neutral case evaluator, and is a past member of the 10th District Grievance Committee in Virginia.
 
John P. Forest, II

 

John Forest handles business organization, estate planning/wealth preservation, and real estate matters from both the transactional and litigation aspects. Mr. Forest has represented individuals in their efforts to form, capitalize, organize, and prepare exit strategies for various commercial entities. He has counseled individuals with regard to preparation of estate plans, trusts, wills, powers of attorney, and advance medical directives. Mr. Forest has significant litigation experience ranging from RICO claims in federal court to collections in small claims courts. He has represented national title insurance underwriters as well as local title agents on coverage questions. Mr. Forest received his undergraduate degree from the University of Richmond and has been in private practice since his graduation from the George Mason University School of Law in 1991. He is a member of the Virginia State Bar Business Law, Litigation, Real Estate and Trusts and Estates Sections. He is admitted to practice before all federal and state courts in Virginia and Maryland.

Sefton K. Smyth

 

Sefton Smyth graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law in 2004, where he was involved in the Lyle Moot Court Competition, the Virginia Sports and Entertainment Law Journal, and the Criminal Defense Clinic. Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Smyth worked with his father at the firm of Smyth & Smyth Attorneys. Mr. Smyth is a member of the Virginia State Bar.

Matthew C. Indrisano

 

Matthew C. Indrisano graduated from George Mason University School of Law in 2003. Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Indrisano worked as a government services attorney for Forfeiture Support Associates assigned to the Drug Enforcement Administration and later worked as an associate for the Fairfax, Virginia law firm of McGeehan & Associates, PLC. Mr. Indrisano is a member of the Virginia State Bar. He has experience in business law and traffic violations and homeowners'/condominium association law.
 
 
Lucy A. Boerum, Office Administrator

 

Lucy has been a legal secretary, paralegal, and administrative assistant in the legal field for over twenty-seven years, and with this firm since its inception in 1995. She is experienced in handling civil litigation, personal injury, medical malpractice, estate, commercial and residential real estate transactions, and complex estate and domestic relations matters. Lucy has served as secretary to the Commissioner of Accounts for both domestic and estate cases. She formerly served as an insurance defense secretary for GEICO staff counsel's office and prior to that administered a small law firm in Hampton, Virginia.
